Supportive Therapy

What is supportive therapy? Supportive therapy primarily focuses on providing validation, encouragement, and emotional support designed to bring compassion, empathy, and comfort to those it is offered to. It often involves practical knowledge and tools designed to help patients navigate life stressors and chronic mental health conditions. This direct technique helps improve self-esteem and improve adaptive skills with a focus on the patient’s overall health and daily functioning. Supportive therapy will be offered to some extent in every patient appointment at Lifesong Mental Health & Wellness.

Are other specific types of therapy offered? While certain therapeutic techniques from different forms of therapy may be offered such as found in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), patients often benefit from separate therapy sessions with a licensed therapist. These sessions are of longer duration and meet regularly either on a weekly, biweekly, or other regularly occurring schedule. Overwhelming evidence supports a dual approach of therapy and medication for many mental health conditions, resulting in superior patient outcomes.
