Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition that manifests in mood extremes. The manic or hypomanic phase typically lasts four or more days where one might feel “on top of the world,” invincible, super high energy though only getting a couple of hours of sleep, finding themselves acting in ways, doing things, or taking risks they normally would not. This episode may be followed by a return to normal/baseline mood or lapse directly into a depressed mood that lasts weeks to months.

Bipolar I is typified by at least one manic episode which may be preceded or followed by hypomania or major depressive disorder. Mania may trigger a break from reality called psychosis and often requires hospitalization.

Bipolar II consists of at least one episode of major depressive disorder and at least one hypomanic episode but never a manic episode.

Cyclothymia is a condition in which there are many periods of hypomania symptoms or periods of depression symptoms that occur for at least 2 years in adults.

Mixed episodes, where one has a few symptoms of depression along with a few symptoms of hypomania, can also occur.

Treatment for bipolar disorder is lifelong and often involves a combination of psychotherapy and medications such as mood stabilizer.

“For I know the plans I have for you,”declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
